Stefen Wisniewski (61) has started at right guard this season, but could play center if needed.

The Daily Collegian has featured sophomore starting right gaurd and Schreyer Scholar Stefan Wisniewski. He has had a great season and they are even preparing him to play center, if need be.

Wisniewski, a dean’s list student who has been around football his entire life, said the mental aspect of playing center was easy for him to absorb.

The more difficult part, he said, was being closer to defenders and having less time to react. Plus he had to learn how to snap the ball and engage his defender quickly.

“When you’re a center, the nose guard’s right there on your face. When you’re a guard you’re off the ball a little bit and you get a little bit more separation,” Wisniewski said. “So just the fact that the lineman’s going to be on you that much quicker makes it a little bit tougher.

But Wisniewski, as well as the rest of the Nittany Lions, said he hopes he doesn’t have to try his hand at going facemask to facemask with an opposing nose tackle this season.

Instead, he’d prefer everyone stayed healthy, Shipley remained at center and the line kept paving the way for 250-plus rushing yards per game.

Wisniewski said he’s been lucky to be able to play next to a pair of fifth-year seniors in Shipley and left guard Rich Ohrnberger. He said their wealth of knowledge has made him a better blocker and helped him adjust to starting at the college level.

They’ve made him feel at home on the line.

“Technique-wise especially, A.Q. and Rich have really helped me a lot,” Wisniewski said. “Things they’ve done, things they’ve tried in games, ’cause they’ve been starters for so long now they really have a lot of experience.

“Especially, too, they’re so confident and they’re so comfortable in there. They’ve really helped me feel comfortable just playing with those guys they’re so relaxed.”

Debate Tailgate Friday Night

(Assuming the debate is still on!) This Friday night we will co-host with Liberal Arts a viewing of the first presidential debate of the 2008 campaign in the HUB. Debate Tailgate starts at 8:00 in Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center. We will have pre-debate discussion and post-debate analysis led by Prof. Cheryl Glenn, Liberal Arts Research Professor of English and Women’s Studies and Co-director of the Center for Democratic Deliberation.

In preparation you might want to view this video prepared by PBS.  It was made for secondary education, but I found it very interesting and a nice introduction into the history of presidential debates.

I hope to see you there!

Student’s Mural Unveiled

Mary Buck paints part of the wall of the Millheim Mural Project. CDT/ Nabil K. MarkThe Centre Daily Times ran a sory yesterday about Schreyer Senior Elody Gyekis’s thesis project which is a community mural in Millheim.

MILLHEIM — If only all laundry looked this good.

Elody Gyekis’ mural of a quilt hanging from an imagined clothesline in downtown Millheim puts most washing to shame. After months of work, the mural that has been an exercise in community involvement through public art will have its official unveiling from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Elk Creek Café and Aleworks.

Many have already had a chance to drive by and see the mural on the side of the café, and their reactions are a range of awe and appreciation.

“I think it’s wonderful. It lets everyone who drives by know what Millheim has to offer,” said Amy Downs, director of St. John’s Childhood Center. She and her summer campers helped paint sections of the mural and watched its installation a couple weeks ago. “I wanted them to be part of this history,” said Downs.

I don’t believe I will be able to make the unveiling, but if you are out driving on this beautiful Sunday (or any other day) swing by and see this wonderful work. Well done Elody!
