New Site, New Videos

I mentioned the new SHC site, but did you know that there are new videos up as well? Including a bloopers reel! Be sure to check it out: SHC Video Gallery

Donuts!

Don’t forget! Come join me for donuts tomorrow, FRIDAY morning. There is even hot chocolate!

The New Site is Up!

And it is looking great! My deep thanks to all those who worked on it! So without further ado, please head over to http://shc.psu.edu/.

Website Update and Donuts with the Dean!

By now many current students will have received the listserv with the following announcements:

Redesigned SHC Web site
The SHC Web site has been overhauled with a new look, lots of photos, and a fun video gallery (you’ll find it in the Future Students and About the SHC sections). IMPORTANT: In addition to giving the site a new look we’ve also shortened many of the URLs which means pages you’ve bookmarked will no longer be where you expect to find them. Go to http://shc.psu.edu and check out the new site. As a Scholar, you’ll find information you need under Current Students — you’ll want to go there to find pages that you’ve previously bookmarked and save them with the new URLs. Feel free to explore the rest of the site, too. Like what you see? Have suggestions? Contact Chris Arbutina, College Relations Coordinator, at caa1@psu.edu to tell her what you think about the new site.

Donuts with the Dean – 2/29http://www.pachd.com/free-images/food-images/donut-01.jpg
Join Dean Brady on Friday, February 29, at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby of Simmons Hall for “Donuts with the Dean.” There will be lots of donuts, hot chocolate and good conversation so make plans to stop by and get a jump start on your Friday morning.

I wanted to point out that the website will go live on Thursday morning. And please do come by for donuts on Friday! We had to move it up a week due to meetings but please come on by and join me for some deep fried joy!

THON 2008 – For the Kids

DSC07526.JPGLast night began THON 2008, the annual student dance marathon at Penn State that benefits pediatric cancer research and treatment at the Hershey Medical Center. It is the largest student philanthropy in the world, raising over $5.2M last year alone!

Thousands of Penn Staters raise funds all year long and then nearly 700 are dancing for 46 hours straight. It is an amazing experience. I will be posting a podcast with interviews later.

If you have just done your taxes and realized that you really should have given more to charity then please head over to http://thon.org/ and donate what you can. The three teams associated with our honors college are SHC, Atlas, and Springfield, but there are many others including a Newman THON team.

Back again THON, and more snow!

Florida BeachI have not blogged lately because I was traveling in Florida, meeting with supporters of the college. It was a great trip, but call me silly, I am glad to be back home with more snow! (Although the additional snow day for my kids means an extra day on their school year. That isn’t so great.)

This weekend is THON, which, for those not familiar with it, is the largest student philanthropy in the nation. I was amazed by the students and families I met there last year. I will be doing interviews at THON again this year and I encourage everyone to consider a donation. The Schreyer Honors College has three different THON teams: SHC, Atlas, and  Springfield. They have made significant strides in just a few years and Atlas was the highest raising non-Greek THON team last year (with Springfield close behind!).  (My previous THON posts, including my podcast with interviews from THON, can be found here.)

And one last note: offer letters will be going out mid-week next week, so hang in there!

Snow!

Today dawned with a lovely layer of snow…and the layers continue to build up! Last year our first snow day, for local schools and PSU, was on Valentine’s Day. This year we haven’t closed for classes (yet) but the snow is coming! I just can’t wait to get home and go sledding with my kids! :-)  SHC Snow

Bergen Lecture Coverage

The lecture last night with Peter Bergen was brilliant! We had close to 400 people and a lot of coverage in the local media. The story for the Daily Collegian is here and the Centre Daily Times covered it as well here.  The local CBS affiliate had a nice little piece on it as well, but it is not up on their website. Thank you all for coming and thank you Peter!

CNN Terror Analyst Lectures on Monday 2/11/08

I had the pleasure of meeting Peter Bergen in the spring of 2002. He is not only a very affable and engaging speaker, but he has had unprecedented access (prior to 2001) to Osama bin Laden and has a clear view and understanding of al Qaeda. I encourage you to come out for what is sure to be an insightful lecture.

PSU faculty address PA turnpike changes

If you live in PA you may have heard recent plans for privatizing I-80. Penn State faculty member Peter Swann at Harrisburg recently released his research findings. It so happens that my brother, Stephan Brady, is also a PSU faculty member at Harrisburg and has interviewed his colleague about his research and the economic and environmental impacts of such a change to the toll-roads on Pennsylvania.  The Podcast can be found here.
