First Year Scholar Plays in First Football Game

I wanted to put up a quick note and congratulations to our first year Scholar and offensive lineman Stefan Wisniewski for getting his first chance to play with the football team last Saturday. As the Daily Collegian noted, he performed extremely well and showed great poise.

Shaw’s absence also created an opportunity for true freshman Stefen Wisniewski, who shared time with Lucian at right guard.

Most freshmen that come into their first game are a little wide-eyed at first, said junior center A.Q. Shipley. But after Wisniewski had played through his first drive on the Lions’ offensive line — and received some encouragement from his older teammates — he was fine, Shipley said.

Stefan apparently will get even more playing time, along with Lucian, this week against the Wolverines. Good luck Stefan! And beat Michigan!

The Patriot Tour

One Liberty Place
I arrived back home at noon today after a great (but I must say, tiring) trip! Yesterday we had two meetings in Philly. The first meeting was at The Pyramid Club, on the top of the Mellon building. The picture to the right is of One Liberty Place taken from the 51st floor of the aforementioned Mellon building. This was the room where we held our luncheon with a dozen and a half great Penn Staters, almost all of whom were Scholars (graduates of either the College or its predecessor, the Scholars Program).

In the evening we had a dinner at the Pennsylvania Country Club, hosted by this years Alumni Fellow, John Ball. We had over two dozen alumni, Scholars, and parents of Scholars. This was a great close to our Patriot Tour, where we brought before some of our strongest supports the outline of our upcoming campaign. This campaign, “For The Future,” is student focused and enhancing honors education is one of the featured objectives. Stay tuned for more information as we fine tune our goals, but be assured that our primary concern, like that of the campaign as a whole, is focused upon improving the opportunities and experience of our Scholars.

So thank you to all those who came out! We had a wonderful time and thank you for your continued support.

Out of Town in Concord, MA

Meeting HallSaturday morning my colleagues and I flew out for Boston and a whirlwind trip that I am calling “The Patriot Tour.” We are taking our campaign case to some of our most ardent supports of the College. Our first night was at the Colonial Inn, established in 1716. They had a great sign explaining that their display in the lobby was down, “as we are re-write our history.” If only it were so easy.

Today we head down to Princeton, NJ and then tomorrow we will have two meetings in Philly. I have to say that I enjoy these times immensely. It is important that we get different perspectives, thoughts, and ideas. Three couples last night are also parents and I promised I would tell their students that they are very cool and great parents. They are! :-)

$10,000 Scholarship for Student Bloggers

First a warning: I have just learned of this scholarship and I know nothing of the group offering the scholarship. However, I felt that it would be good to pass it along to you, my discerning, and often blogging, student readership. So, with that caveat:

Why a Blogging Scholarship?
At College Scholarships.org we believe that everyone deserves a shot at a decent education. And we love bloggers. Not for the least of reasons, because we blog, and one of the founders of this site makes a living as a blogger. :)

We believe passion is important. As the world gets more competitive, those who are passionate about what they do, and work close to their passions, will be able to become and stay successful even as technology and automation eat away at many business models. Those who are willing to share their experiences with the world help make the world a better place, even if most bloggers only consider blogging a hobby.

We believe those who freely express themselves are far more likely to find their true passions and connect with people to bring on large scale social change.

Read all the details here and let me know if you apply!

New Podcasts!

It has been too long since I have posted, sorry about that! But it has been so busy in these first weeks. Judging from conversations at lunch in Simmons and at the Student Council meeting last night it seems that most folks enjoyed SHOtime. Please do continue to give us your feedback and let us know if you want to help next year and what you would do to make it better.

Stammtisch
Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing Michael Cronin, sophomore in EMS, for our first Stammtisch podcast of the year. As a reminder, the “Stammtisch” is a series of podcasts where I interview students, alumni, and friends of the college. Michael spoke at this summer’s “Spend a Summer Day” recruitment sessions and is a great student. I think you will enjoy the interview. As always, you can get it via iTunes or directly downloaded from here. (And play it below.)

LJS Podcast CrewLeadership Jumpstart
The second podcast to go up today is from the freshman class that runs during orientation and then throughout the semester. During orientation they break into three groups and each group has to either produce a video, slide show, or a podcast. This is a fun few minutes so be sure to give it a listen!

The students’ perspective on SHOtime : iTunes and direct download.
