First Night with the Dean

First Night crowdFirst Night with the Dean! This year’s convocation had a twist: late night talk show format. This was the most fun I have had in a LONG time. It was great! Be sure to check out the podcast.

Some highlights:

  • The Pulse was our student band.
  • The Provost was my first guest and said that “Provost Pistachio” would be a good flavor for the Berkey Creamery to create.
  • Megan Krench, our Lead Mentor spoke about the upcoming events during SHOtime.
  • Hanna Xu, our Scholar Assistant and Student Council President (and one of my first podcasts) talked about some of the great opportunities for Scholars.
  • Nathan Kepner, sophomore Scholar and champion magician, performed as the closing act!

You can listen directly to it here or through iTunes here.

It’s SHOtime!

Our first wave of students have moved in today! The first-year Leadership Jumpstart students and their TAs moved in this morning and this afternoon our Mentors (upper classmen for SHOtime) have moved in. I will be meeting with them tomorrow. And then…Wednesday is D-day! I am very excited and looking forward to seeing everyone!

Stay tuned, I will try and post pictures and comments as we go along, but it may just be too much fun to take a break for blogging.

PSU Podcasts Highlighted & Blogs Offered

Podcast HighlightsOver at http://podcasts.psu.edu/ you can read about a variety of educational podcasts on offer at, you guessed it, PSU. And look who is in the highlights section! Be sure to check out our semi-regular podcasts from the SHC. We have been on hiatus for the summer break, but with the students rolling into town next week (and a special SHOtime podcasts to be prepared and produced during orientation!) be sure to check regularly for updates. You can view all our podcasts and listen or download them one at a time from our podcast page on this site or you can subscribe to it directly from within iTunes.

Another great new opportunity for our students (and faculty) that is being piloted this year by those wacky kids at ETS is Penn State blog accounts. That’s right! No more need for Blogger.com or your own WordPress account, students can request their own PSU blog account! For details see blogs.psu.edu and here is the relevent post from Mr. Camplese himself!

Request Your Account

To get started in the Blogs at Penn State pilot project you must first request an account. Because it is a pilot we have decided to not fulfill requests automatically, but we will let people in on a first come, first serve basis. We are very interested in talking with each of you about how you intend to use the toolset. We’d like to include you in announcements and opportunities to get involved with other people using the Blogs at Penn State. What this all means is that someone will be helping you take advantage of the toolset and to offer advice if you need it.

If you request an account we’ll do everything we can to get you started quickly. Since the Blogs at Penn State is centrally managed by Information Technology Services, be assured that it is secure and takes advantage of your Penn State credentials.

Everything you write here will be published in your own PSU Personal Webspace so you can always get to it. We want you to understand that this is your space and you are responsible for taking care of it. The only real policies governing your blog are those that govern PSU Personal Webspace, so you’ll need to take a look at that. Also, because all your blogs publish to your personal webspace, you will need to have applied for and activated it before trying to setup your blog.

And Facebook too…

It always pays to ask yourself, “how would I feel if _______ were to see this?” And fill in the blank with mom/dad/employer/teacher/yougettheidea. :-)

SHOtime!

SHOtimeIn just a scant 9 days the first-ever SHOtime will commence! This is the Schreyer Honors Orientation that will begin on Wednesday August 22nd and is shaping up to be incredible. (More info can be found here or by clicking the image to the right.)

I am not one to be immodest, but I have to tell you, we have some pretty amazing events planned, not least of which is the first-ever First Night with the Dean. (Since this is our first SHOtime simply put “first-ever” in front of everything I am about to tell you about, would you? Thanks!) I don’t want to spill the beans, but I will just say that we have the State Theatre reserved, just for us and it will be standing room only! and the Provost will be joining us, along with several very talented students. Good times.

The next morning begins with donuts and just gets better from there. If you are on Facebook by all means join the SHOtime Facebook group, starting packing the car, make those last minute runs to le Target, and get ready for an exciting beginning to a great year at PSU and SHC!

Medal Ceremony

This Friday will be our medal ceremony for our summer graduates. Congratulations! I also just found this video that someone put up on YouTube from this past spring’s ceremony.

A Scholar Remembered

Everyone at the Schreyer Honors College is deeply saddened to learn today of the passing of one of our Scholars. Senior Matthew Blickley was a remarkable young man who began his Penn State and Schreyer College experience as a member of the Leadership Jumpstart class. His leadership continued throughout his college career as he participated in THON, Leonhard Scholars Program in Engineering, and the PSU chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, to which he had just been elected President.

Associate Dean Judy Ozment taught Matthew in the Leadership Jumpstart and sent me the following note:

Matt Blickley was a welcomed member of the Leadership Jumpstart class of 2004. He, and fellow scholars Naveen Arora, Gary Ezekian, Laura Foley, Chris Lucas, and Elizabeth Miller worked together on a service project team to send various media (books, CDs, DVDs) to active service personnel overseas. Theirs was the first team to garner the attention of the Collegian in their efforts to support active duty service people. He will be greatly missed by the LJS 2004 class, especially, and by his many friends in the Schreyer Honors Community.

Matthew was an outstanding individual, exemplifying what it means to be a Schreyer Scholar. He will be greatly missed by all.
