Scholar in Pirates Credits

Pirates 3I just had a wonderful conversation with a very proud mother. The mother of Mike Knuff, a 2005 Engineering and Scholar graduate and a 2007 M.Eng. graduate, called to thank me for the opportunities that her son has had at PSU and SHC and the inspiration he received to “shoot for the stars.”

Why did she call today? Because last night she saw the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End and Mike, who has since gone out to Hollywood to work in special effects, was in the credits! (And you can see his name in the credits here.)

Congratulations Mike! And we recognize the you had nothing to do with the tortuous plot lines. :-)

Honors Around the Big Ten

We had a great all-day meeting with our colleagues from the CIC. Many are doing very exciting things and we picked up a lot of great ideas. Each program is actually quite different, but we all face similar issues and have similar concerns and I learned much yesterday.

It was also encouraging to hear that in many ways we have been and are leading the way. For example, it is only in the last few years that several of the schools have begun to move towards a university-wide honors program and some are still not yet at that point. It was 1980 when the Penn State University Scholars Program was established across all academic units. I was reminded yet again of what a great program I am privileged to lead.

I have to share with you as well that these were wonderful colleagues. Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. It was a great, cordial exchange of ideas. SHC-PSU will be host next year! And then on to Purdue in 2009.

On the Road @ CIC

Today I am in Chicago meeting Honors Deans and Directors from the other CIC schools. What is CIC? Good question. It is the Big 10 + University of Chicago. So, 12 schools in total because of course “the Big 10″ is really 11 schools.

CIC: Committee on Institutional Cooperation – About CIC

ABOUT CICThe CIC is a consortium of 12 research universities, including the 11 members of the Big Ten Conference and the University of Chicago. With campuses in 8 states, CIC universities enroll more than 300,000 undergraduates and 76,000 graduate students, and employ some 33,000 full-time faculty and 139,000 full-time staff. The CIC is guided by the Provosts of the member universities

I am looking forward to the day and meeting my colleagues! (Dr. Ozment says that I am her “report” to the committee since for the last year she has been telling her colleagues that we have a new Dean but no one has met me.)

Presentation to the BoT

Today I gave a presentation to the University’s Board of Trustees.

Penn State Live has a brief review of my comments. I thought I would share here some of the stats and figures from the presentation as given in the Penn State Live article.

Admitted first-year students are offered the Academic Excellence Scholarship, a renewable four-year grant of $3,500 per year. The fall 2007 incoming class represents 18 states plus the District of Columbia and includes one international student from China. As of Friday, May 11, the college has logged 288 paid accepts; 81 percent of them are from Pennsylvania and 51 percent are female. The class’ middle 50 percent range of average GPA, based on Penn State’s 4.33 scale, is 3.98 to 4.33, and its middle 50 percent range for average SAT score, which also includes converted ACT scores, is 1370 to 1470.

And our goals in the upcoming capital campaign.

As the Schreyer Honors College celebrates its 10th year, University-wide dedication to undergraduate honors education has been solidified through the University’s upcoming capital campaign. The “Enhancing Honors Education” campaign objective seeks to add $101 million, of which the Schreyers’ $25 million has been acknowledged as the lead gift, to facilitate programming and scholarship funds. These resources will help the college recruit the best students in the nation.

Additionally, $5 million of the campaign objective’s funds will secure establishment of the Schreyer Lecture, to be given at Penn State annually by a prominent world leader. This event will complement the college’s annual Luchinsky Memorial Lecture, offered since 1996 and given by a speaker who exemplifies intellectual honesty, personal integrity and joy in learning.

10th Anniversary Video

We have posted the video made for the 10th Anniversary of the Schreyer Honors College on YouTube. View it at YouTube here or below:

New Peter Klein Piece: “Green Scare”

A message from Scholar alumnus Peter Klein (this year’s Luchinsky Lecturer):

… When we look back on this period after 9/11, how will we judge the country’s treatment of Muslim- and Arab-Americans? We wanted to explore that question by examining specific cases, searching for parallels to WWII detentions and “Red Scare” era paranoia, and looking at how the entertainment media has portrayed Muslims in the past five years.

On Tuesday at 8 PM, Dan Rather Reports on HD Net airs the premier of “Green Scare,” which includes a discussion with Tom Ridge, a sit down with “24” executive producer Howard Gordon and a rare interview with Rachel Meeropol, the granddaughter of the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and the lead counsel on Turkmen v Ashcroft, a lawsuit on behalf of the Arab men who were rounded up in the winter of 2001. We also feature interviews with several Muslim-Americans who were wrongly detained and prosecuted, including an exclusive interview with Karim Koubriti, the first Muslim-American to be arrested on terrorism charges, just 6 days after the WTC attacks.

I hope you get a chance to watch. The program will also stream on the web on http://www.hd.net/danrather.html.
Regards,
Peter

Big Events at SHC and PSU!

The last few weeks have been incredibly hectic, so I apologize for my lack of posts. A few weeks ago we had Blue-White weekend, which was also our reunion weekend and last week was our External Advisory Board meeting with a special 10th Anniversary Gala dinner last Friday night. It was a wonderful time with President Spanier and Dean Achterberg speaking. Bob Poole, Charlie Sanders, and Coach Paterno, long-time friends of Mr. and Mrs. Schreyer, also spoke.

In addition to 220 of the Schreyers’ closest friends, there were a large number of Scholars present. All in all, it was a wonderful evening and the presence of the Scholars truly made the evening. There was a video (soon to be posted here) that was truly moving and the comments of students afterwards made me realize that we have not shared enough about Mr. and Mrs. Schreyer. They are remarkable people and the mission and vision of this college truly reflects their own character.

One anecdote from Dr. Sanders stood out and has provided what I think should be our unofficial slogan. The Sanders moved in next to the Schreyers and the first time they knew of Mr. S was one morning, when they were awaked by the sound of a man (Mr. S) in the driveway saying loudly

Good morning world! I am ready for you! Are you ready for me?

That says a lot, doesn’t it? That is what it means to be a Schreyer Scholar, to be ready for the world, whether it is ready for you or not.

(BTW, if you would like to see some pics, try doing a search on Facebook. I didn’t want to post any pictures without permission and our official photog hasn’t given us any yet.)

Finally, a round of congratulations. Congratulations to all those who are about to graduate! Well done! Theses were turned in last Monday, Huzzah! and the medal ceremony is next Friday.

And another congratulations to the Class of 2011! May 1st was the deadline for acceptance of admissions and we look to have a great new class. I am looking forward to SHOtime, our new three-day orientation and we have 80+ current Scholars who are preparing to be mentors. It will be an excellent time. Many of you I will see later this month for FTCAP, so see you soon!

PSU on Jeopardy!

I just received a great note from a student. Be sure to tune in this Friday. (And record it for me. We have a board meeting and dinner tomorrow night.)

Hi Dean Brady,
My name is Anna, and I’m a sophomore in the SHC. I’m not usually one
for self-promotion, but I am very proud to have recently represented
Penn State (and, as an extension, the SHC, though the honors college
was not explicitly mentioned) in the Jeopardy! College Championship.
My show will air this Friday, May 4th, and I make a decent showing,
so I thought I’d let you know if you wanted to tune in!
~Anna
