We first reported this last week, but now it is being carried by Penn State Live

Tuesday, September 26, 2006
University Park, P.A. — Elyse Johnston, a Penn State junior Schreyer Honors College student majoring in biology with minors in civic and community engagement and gerontology, recently became a recipient of a 2006 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) scholarship. This award endeavors to increase the country’s strength in both science and technology communities as a means of protecting the United States from further terrorist attacks. Striving for excellence in their prospective candidates, DHS seeks the brightest collegiate students from across the country to submit proposals and research projects on how the leaders of tomorrow can help protect our country today.

Congratulations again to Elyse!

An SHC alumnus who works at the Bridgespan Group, a consulting company, encourages SHC seniors to apply on-line for positions with them. See below for a job description. Submission deadline for résumés is Wednesday, October 18. Résumés can be submitted online at www.bridgespan.org .
Founded in 2000 and incubated at Bain & Company, the Bridgespan Group is a 501(c)(3)
nonprofit organization bringing leading-edge strategies and tools to the challenges and
opportunities facing nonprofit organizations and foundations.
At the heart of our mission is the belief that nonprofits are the best hope for addressing many
of today’s pressing social and environmental problems. A strong and effective nonprofit sector
can be a powerful lever for change – as well as a source of human inspiration.
While the tools and frameworks used in the for-profit world provide a powerful starting point
for creating this critical impact, the nonprofit sector requires different and distinctive strategies
to produce the desired results. Bridgespan exists to apply the best thinking to the task of
building stronger and more effective nonprofit organizations.
The Bridgespan Group is seeking applications from qualified candidates for the fall of 2007 for
the position of Associate Consultant. Positions are available in our San Francisco and Boston
offices.
The Bridgespan Group will not sponsor H1B visas, but will provide documentation to anyone
eligible to apply for a TN permit.
Position Summary:
Associate Consultants (ACs) are a vital part of the Bridgespan Group’s core consulting
strength, working as members of case teams to provide nonprofit clients with powerful data
and analyses that identify solutions to their greatest challenges – thus enhancing
organizations’ abilities to drive social change. Each AC’s responsibilities will vary from case to
case depending on the needs of the client, which grants ACs exposure to many different types
of analysis. Typical AC case responsibilities include:
· Conducting qualitative research and analysis through interviews with nonprofit client
staff, client beneficiaries, and experts in the field
· Conducting quantitative research and analysis of the nonprofit marketplace
· Conducting financial analysis, including forward-looking financial projections
· Preparing clear and compelling presentation materials
· Presenting analysis and findings
The Bridgespan Group invests heavily in the training and development of each Associate
Consultant. While most of the training is on the job, ACs attend formalized training throughout
their time with the Bridgespan Group, starting with an extensive in-the-office program. This is
followed by a 10 day off-site program with both Bain and Bridgespan ACs from around the
world. Bridgespan helps each Associate Consultant build the fundamentals of a successful
career: cracking tough problems, communicating solutions with clients and teams, and
collaborating with senior Consultants and Managers.
Qualifications:
Associate Consultant applicants must have:
· Strong academic backgrounds
· Analytical skills
· High motivation level
· Strong commitment to teamwork
· Outstanding interpersonal skills
· Commitment to changing the nonprofit sector
The Bridgespan Group provides competitive compensation and an attractive benefits package.
We are committed to proving equal opportunities. We serve diverse organizations, and are
committed to non-discrimination. It is our policy to ensure that all individuals with whom we

Women’s Soccer!

Tonight our daughter had a special treat. She was invited to be an “honorary captain” for the women’s soccer game against Michigan State. It was an intense game that ended only in overtime. The second goal was scored by Aubrey Aden-Buie, a Schreyer Scholar who was recently covered in a Collegian article which said,

Penn State has been able to rely on the sure foot of Aubrey Aden-Buie to provide a much-needed spark.

There were two other goals, the third obviously in overtime, by players whose name I am afraid I have forgotten! Sorry ladies! (I will try to get a link to the Collegian story when it comes out.) The Lady Lions play Michigan on Sunday at noon, we will be there (barring rain) and I encourage you to come out as well!

The Big Ten championship will be played here on November 2-5th. With two Scholars on the team (first year Scholar Jamie Morrison is also on the team) it sounds like an Honors outing to me!

UPDATE:They beat Michigan 4-1! Way to go ladies!
